The final countdown is well underway for the illustrious opening game of the 2010 AFL Season, which will kick off on the 25th of March at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and will see Richmond at home to Carlton.
The two Melbourne sides will bounce off the highly anticipated AFL season just after 7pm, and Carlton is ahead in the odds at $1.63, with Richmond not far behind at $2.25.
The Blues dominated over Richmond in their opening meet in 2009, however will be without Captain Chris Judd due to suspension, and over the break the side lost Brendan Fevola and Cameron Cloke – two of their top players.
The MCG will fill up again on the evening of Friday the 26th, as the 2009 AFL Champions Geelong take on Essendon, and the reigning Champs seem set to take the win at $1.26, while Essendon are at $3.75.

However the Bombers did conquer the unthinkable last season when they beat favourites St Kilda in the 20th round, and would provide a lucrative win if they managed the same in the 2010 opening round.
Sydney’s ANZ Stadium is host to St Kilda’s opening match, where they travel to play the Sydney Swans on the 27th of March. As last year’s runner up, the Saints are going into their opening match as favourites with the Swans not too far behind at $1.44 and $2.75 respectively, although keep in mind the Swans have the home territory advantage.
Elsewhere on Saturday the 27th, the Brisbane Lions are at home to the West Coast Eagles, who are at $1.40 and $2.90 respectively. With the Lions having accrued Brendan Fevola, the side is drawing headlines due to his off-pitch antics, which may derail the side’s concentration into the first round, offering Eagles fans an opportunity to gain in the odds.
Other matches to be held in the opening round of the 2010 AFL Season are Melbourne v Hawthorne, Port Adelaide v North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs v Collingwood and Freemantle v Adelaide.
