AFL Round 1 Special Bets

The 2010 AFL Season kicks off tonight, and over the course of the weekend will bring out that burning passion deep within AFL fans – and Sportsbet have some great specials markets on offer to punters!

The season begins with Richmond at home to Carlton at the MCG and will start at 7.10pm.

Sportsbet have some fantastic markets which allow all supporters to get involved in the opening round, no matter who your team is.

Sydney are currently atop the odds for the lowest scoring team for this weekend at $6.50. Facing the pre-season favourites St Kilda, it may be a safe bet, but North Melbourne alongside Melbourne are close behind at $7.

Geelong and Hawthorn are the sides to back when it comes to the highest scoring side for round 1 at $4.50.

However Geelong could be a dead bet with the side aiming to start the Season slower than previous campaigns, and as Hawthorne are playing Melbourne – who won just four matches last year – the Hawks may well be more lucrative to punters.

Gary Ablett Jr, of Geelong, looks set to be the player to end the first round with the most possessions at $6.50, and after his dominance in the 2009 Season may well be a safe bet.

However Dane Swan and Sam Mitchell from Collingwood and Hawthorn respectively are also contenders at $7.50 each.

Swan hit 48-possesions in 2009 against Port Adelaide – breaking Ablett’s record earlier in the season, while Mitchell equalled second in the AFL possessions last year, averaging 29.7 a game.

What punters must remember is that the opening round of the AFL Season is when mistakes are made and upsets happen.

Hawthorn’s Jarryd Roughead is topping the odds to end the weekend as the leading goal kicker at $4.75. Close behind in the market is the Brisbane new recruit Brendan Fevola at $5.50 – and the forward could be more lucrative as he aims to prove his worth to his new side.

Sportsbet is also offering odds for punters to pick four winning sides over either the Thursday/Friday/Saturday or the Saturday/Sunday matches.

The combination currently topping the odds is Carlton-Geelong-Hawthorne-St.Kilda at $3.25 for the first three days, and Brisbane-Port Adelaide-Western Bulldogs-Fremantle/Adelaide at $6.05 for the last two days.

However what punters must remember is that the opening round of the AFL Season is when mistakes are made and upsets happen, as teams are still coming together and finding their footing, so take advantage with the variety of markets at!
