AFL Round 7 Betting Guide

With six rounds of top flight football now played in 2012, the contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pretenders. Undefeated so far this year, there is no denying West Coast are the team to beat at the moment with Carlton, Sydney, Essendon and Adelaide nipping at their heels. One of the lowlights of season 2012 to date has been the amount of one-sided contests but round 7 shapes up as one of the closest to date with some hot fixtures including Essendon V West Coast, Richmond V Sydney and Adelaide V Geelong.

Melbourne V Hawthorn, Friday May 11, 7:50pm, MCG

Unfortunately round 7 will kick off with what looks to be a shocking one-sided affair. The Demons are winless so far this year and for good reason. They have looked like boys playing against men in most of their fixtures this year and as such the talented Hawthorn outfit are at Black Caviar odds of $1.03 (bookmaker.com.au) to keep them at the bottom of the competition ladder. With three wins from six starts, Hawthorn seem to be underachieving so far this season but were impressive during their dominant 35-point win over St Kilda on the weekend.

Melbourne Win $12.50 Line +49.5 $1.90

Hawthorn Win $1.03 Line -49.5 $1.90

Adelaide V Geelong, Saturday May 12, 1:15pm, AAMI Stadium

Adelaide showed they are no pretenders this year, beating the in-form Swans in a gripping encounter last weekend. They get a chance once again this week to prove their premiership credentials in what is likely to be their toughest match this year. With a side boasting the likes of Jimmy Bartel, Tom Hawkins, James Podsiadly and plenty of other stars Geelong go in to the match as rightful favourites but will have their work cut out against an Adelaide side who have shown they can tough out a win.

Adelaide Win $2.26 Line +7.5 $1.90

Geelong Win $1.63 Line -7.5 $1.90

GWS V Gold Coast, Saturday May 12, 1:40pm, Manuka Oval

The good news about this game is one team will get their first win of the season. The bad news it is likely to be a scrappy encounter. Both teams have been simply outclassed by more experienced opposition throughout the first six weeks but it is the Gold Coast who look more likely to break their winning duck this week. The men from the glitter strip demonstrated their potential when going down by just seven points to Fremantle on the weekend and will be buoyed this week by the re-signing of star youngster Harley Bennell.

GWS Win $2.90 Line +16.5 $1.90

Gold Coast Win $1.40 Line -16.5 $1.90

Richmond V Sydney Swans, Saturday May 12, 4:40pm, SCG

This game has the potential to be the closest of the round. Richmond may have just two wins for the year so far to the Swans five but they have shown in the past two rounds they are not to be taken lightly. They went within 10 points of the undefeated West Coast in round 5 and gave Port Adelaide a 38-point flogging on the weekend. Beware the wounded Sydney though who will be looking to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the year to Adelaide last weekend.

Richmond Win $1.87

Sydney Win $1.93

Essendon V West Coast, Saturday May 12, 7:40pm, Etihad Stadium

This one is tough to call. Two in-form sides go head-to-head in a block busting clash and the undefeated Eagles face their biggest test yet after suffering even more injuries. They have shown their depth and been able to cover adequately so far this year but will be further weakened on Saturday with Adam Selwood and Ashton Hams unavailable. The Bombers have also been injury hit this year but will come out all guns blazing after hammering the Lions on the weekend and will be looking to knock off the premiership front runners.

Essendon $1.75 Line -4.5 $1.90

West Coast $2.08 Line +4.5 $1.90

Brisbane V Collingwood, Saturday May 12, 7:40pm, Gabba

The Lions have struggled this year and it won’t get any easier for them this weekend when they take on a side with genuine premiership credentials. After a sluggish start to the season, the Magpies produced a gutsy one-point win over a quality Essendon side two weeks ago and convincingly beat the Bulldogs last weekend.

Brisbane $5.40 Line +30.5 $1.90

Collingwood $1.15 Line -30.5 $1.90

North Melbourne V Western Bulldogs, Sunday May 13, 1:10pm, Etihad Stadium

North Melbourne are a short head-to-head $1.37 bookmaker.com.au favourite here but would be a good addition to a multi-bet as they should be far too strong for a Western Bulldogs team that lacks depth. The Bulldogs have won two games this year but they both came against the hapless Demons and GWS while North Melbourne have produced three victories and simply have more talent than the Bulldogs.

North Melbourne Win $1.37

Western Bulldogs Win $3.10

Fremantle Dockers V Port Adelaide, Sunday May 13, 4:40pm, Patersons Stadium

Port Adelaide have only won one game this season and it looks like it will stay that way following Sunday’s trip west to Patersons Stadium. They come up against a Fremantle side who has produced four wins from six games and only just went down to premiership hopefuls Carlton two weeks ago.

Fremantle Win $1.13

Port Adelaide Win $6.00

St Kilda V Carlton, Monday May 14, 7:40pm, Etihad Stadium

St Kilda will be looking to bounce back from their 35-point loss to Hawthorn at the weekend but they face a tough encounter with Carlton who have been exceptional this year. Despite resting a number of stars, they hammered newcomers GWS by 67 points on the weekend and they look set to build their impressive record of five wins from six matches this year.

St Kilda Win $3.80

Carlton Win $1.26
