AFL Round 8 Betting guide

There have been plenty of one-sided affairs so far this year but round 8 of the AFL looks set to be a cracker with plenty of upset chances. By now it is becoming obvious who the top teams are and who won’t feature come September but there are plenty of teams hovering mid-table who will be looking to advance their way up the ladder.

Collingwood V Geelong, Friday May 18, 7:50pm, MCG

The round opens with what should be an absolute nail biter and is a clear stand out for what is likely to be the match of the round. Collingwood have five wins this year while Geelong have four but both teams must be considered chances to contend for the premiership come the business end of the season. Collingwood go into the clash full of confidence after thumping the Lions by 58 points last weekend while Geelong will be hungry to bounce back after being trounced by Adelaide.

Collingwood – Win $1.70 Line -5.5 $1.90

Geelong – Win $2.14 Line +5.5 $1.90

Port Adelaide V North Melbourne, Saturday May 19, 1:45pm, AAMI Stadium

Prior to last weekend you could have booked North Melbourne in as absolute certainties for this one but if they perform how they did when losing to the Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide become a genuine chance. There is no hiding the fact that Port Adelaide have been poor this year, with just one win from seven matches, but the Kangaroos were outclassed by a Bulldogs side who have struggled this year. The Kangaroos will start as bookmaker.com.au favourites but will need to turn around last week’s performance or risk being upset again.

Port Adelaide – Win $2.70 Line +15.5 $1.90

North Melbourne – Win $1.46 -15.5 $1.90

Hawthorn V Fremantle Dockers, Saturday May 19, 2:10pm, Aurora Stadium

Hawthorn may be below Fremantle on the competition ladder but they go into this one as deserving $1.19 favourites. With an line up boasting the attacking services of Lance Franklin and Cyril Rioli the Hawks look too strong for the men from the west who, despite having recorded five wins this year, have struggled in front of goal.

Hawthorn – Win $1.19 Line -29.5 $1.90

Fremantle – Win $4.70 Line +29.5 $1.90

Sydney Swans V Melbourne Demons, Saturday May 19, 4:40pm, SCG

Melbourne join the Gold Coast as one of two sides who still remain winless after seven rounds and it looks to stay that way this weekend. The Demons have been nothing short of a class below everyone they have played this year and come up against a Swans side who have been very impressive. The Swans have dropped just two games this year and have beaten the likes of Hawthorn so should be far too strong the hapless Demons.

Sydney – Win $1.09 Line -41.5 $1.90

Melbourne – Win $7.50 Line +41.5 $1.90

Western Bulldogs V Gold Coast Suns, Saturday May 19, 7:10pm, TIO Stadium

The Western Bulldogs have hardly set the world alight this year but were good enough to dispose of a poor Kangaroos outfit on the weekend which should be more than enough to beat the struggling Suns. Still winless after seven rounds, the men from the glitter strip hit an all time low on the weekend when losing to fellow newcomers GWS.

Western Bulldogs – Win $1.17 Line -33.5 $1.90

Gold Coast – Win $5.10 Line +33.5 $1.90

Essendon V Richmond, Saturday May 19, 7:45pm, MCG

This is another match where an upset could be on the cards. The Bombers have been very impressive this year with six wins and ended West Coast’s unbeaten streak on the weekend but Richmond are no easy beats. They may have just three wins in 2012 but are capable of playing some quality football which was evident last weekend when they dominated the in-form Swans.

Essendon – Win $1.51 Line -12.5 $1.90

Richmond – Win $2.54 Line +12.5 $1.90

Brisbane V GWS, Sunday May 20, 1:10pm, Gabba

Brisbane may start as $1.20 favourites here but the match is not a forgone conclusion. The Lions have struggled this year and were again on the end of a frightful flogging at the hands of Collingwood on the weekend. GWS meanwhile are full of confidence after recording their maiden victory in convincing fashion on Saturday and their youthful exuberance could see an upset against a Lions side desperate to turn their form around.

Brisbane – Win $1.20 Line -30.5 $1.90

GWS – Win $4.50 Line +30.5 $1.90

Carlton V Adelaide, Sunday May 20, 3:15pm, Etihad Stadium

Another match that should be closer than the betting market suggests. Carlton will head into the match as favourites and have a talented line up but will need to bounce back from their upset defeat at the hands of St Kilda on Monday. Adelaide meanwhile have been the surprise packets this year and if they can produce the kind of football that saw them hammer Geelong by 50 points on Saturday they are a great chance of remaining with just one loss to their name.

Carlton – Win $1.40 Line -17.5 $1.90

Adelaide – Win $2.95 Line +17.5 $1.90

West Coast V St Kilda, Sunday May 20, 4:40pm, Patersons Stadium

Another match where the outsiders are a big chance. St Kilda were phenomenal when producing an upset win over Carlton on Monday and they get their chance to again upset a competition heavy weight when they go head to head with an understrength West Coast line up. The injury-hit Eagles suffered their first loss of the year to Essendon on the weekend and will need to bounce back quickly to beat the improving Sainters.

West Coast – Win $1.40 Line -17.5 $1.90

St Kilda – Win $2.90 Line +17.5 $1.90
