Round 20 of the AFL season is set to start with a bang as fifth place West Coast take on last year’s premiers Geelong on Friday night. As both teams head into the business end of the season, every win is crucial as they look to get as high on the ladder as possible ahead of the finals series. Geelong showed they are ready to again give the premiership a shake last week in a tough win over Hawthorn while West Coast will be looking to bounce back after being trounced by Fremantle in the local derby.
One thing West Coast will have to turn around this week if they are to avenge last week’s loss is their midfield after being outplayed in the centre of the park in their past few outings. The Eagles will be boosted however by the return of captain Darren Glass whose absence was obvious last week as the Fremantle forwards kicked plenty of goals. Apart from his superb skills in defence, Glass is an inspirational figure in the side and look to the team to lift around their leader.
While Geelong haven’t been as consistent this year as previous seasons they are improving at the right end of the season and it would not be a surprise to see them feature well into the finals series. A key reason for the success has been the goal kicking of Tom Hawkins and how West Coast contain him will have a big bearing on the amount of points the Cats can score.
Geelong were tough against Hawthorn and seem to be building at the right time of the year. West Coast will be hungry to right their wrongs from the Fremantle loss but Geelong are hitting form at the right time and just might have more points in them than the Eagles.
