There are is only one round left in the 2013 AFL regular season and the removal of the Essendon Bombers has given the season of a number of clubs a lifeline.
North Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane now all have an opportunity to compete in the 2013 AFL Finals but the team in the driving seat to claim the ‘lucky ninth’ spot is the Carlton Blues who will return to the finals if they can beat Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.
The Port Adelaide Power have already secured a place in the 2013 AFL Finals – a remarkable feat considering the disaster that was their 2012 campaign. Coach Ken Hinkley has installed a sense of fight into his young list and they won’t be going into the finals just to make up the numbers. Not only will the Power be looking to take some winning form into the finals they will be pumped up wearing their heritage jerseys in their last ever game at AAMI Stadium.
Carlton’s season looked dead and buried when they lost to the Western Bulldogs in Round 20 but back-to-back wins and the removal of Essendon from the finals has given them renewed hope. The Blues have struggled for consistency under new coach Mick Malthouse but defeated Port Adelaide by eighteen points when they met earlier this year. Everything has gone Carlton’s way to give them a chance to play finals football and they will be desperate to take advantage of this unique opportunity.
While Carlton have more to play for they have generally struggled in high pressure situations this season while Port Adelaide will thrive in front of their passionate home crowd.
