2014 AFL Round Nine Betting Preview

Round 9 of the 2014 AFL Season got underway last night, with the Adelaide Crows scoring an upset win over the Collingwood Magpies, and there is the potential for a number of upset results this weekend.

The ladder-topping Port Adelaide and Hawthorn are both on the bye, but there is still plenty of big games this weekend, highlighted by the clash between the Fremantle Dockers and Geelong Cats on Saturday night.

Our team of sports betting experts have analysed every game of round nine of the 2014 AFL Season and come up with the best bets for this weekend.

Friday – Essendon Bombers vs Sydney Swans

Sydney have returned to their best form after their slow start to the season, while the positive signs out of Essendon are fading quickly, despite the Bombers beating the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions in the past two weeks

Essendon will have to improve significantly on their performance against Brisbane to be any chance of beating the Swans and it is a tough situation for the Bombers players who have the threat of ASADA sanctions over their heads.

The Swans are slowly starting to get their best team on the park and their revamped forward line of Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett should be able to lead them to a big win tonight.

The Tip: Sydney by 38

The Bet: Sydney to beat the spread (-17.5 at Ladbrokes.com.au)

Saturday – Fremantle Dockers vs Geelong Cats

This is easily the match of the round and there are number of interesting storylines heading into this clash.

Fremantle have slipped down the ladder after losing three of their past four games, but the side will be desperate to return to winning form to honour favourite son Matthew Pavlich in his 300th game, while Geelong are looking to avenge their loss against the Dockers in the qualifying final last year.

Bookmakers have been unable to split the two sides, but the emotion of Pavlich’s 300th game and the home ground advantage should be enough to get Fremantle across the line in what has the potential to be a classic.

The Tip: Fremantle by 4

The Bet: Fremantle to win ($1.90 at Ladbrokes.com.au)

Sunday – St Kilda Saints vs Gold Coast Suns

St Kilda have fallen into a hole after their fair start to the season and face a Gold Coast Suns side who will be refreshed after having a bye this weekend.

Gold Coast have flown under the radar this season, but are comfortably sitting in the top eight and this is the sort of game that they can’t afford to lose if they want to plays finals football for the first time in their history.

St Kilda face a tough six day back-up here and it is difficult to see them getting up against a fresh and motivated Suns outfit.

The Tip: Gold Coast by 38

The Bet: Gold Coast to beat the spread (-26.5 at Ladbrokes.com.au
