2014 AFL Round 16 Betting Preview

There were a number of big upsets in the AFL last weekend and punters that backed plenty of underdogs would have had a very successful weekend.

There are not as many rivalry games in round 16 of the 2014 AFL season, but there are still plenty of betting opportunities on offer as well as a number of interesting clashes.

Our team of sports betting experts have analysed every game this weekend to come up with the best betting plays available!

Friday – North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Hawthorn Hawks

North Melbourne had their top four hopes shattered when they suffered a shock loss to the Brisbane Lions last weekend and the Kangaroos face a much tougher assignment in the form of Hawthorn this weekend.

The Hawks have defied an injury crisis to sit on top of the 2014 AFL ladder and is tough to see them letting a game like this slip at this stage of the season.

North Melbourne have made a habit of bouncing back quickly from poor performances and while they are unlikely to take the four points against the Hawks, this should be a closer game than what a lot of bookmakers are predicting.

The Tip: Hawthorn by 17

The Bet: North Melbourne to beat the spread (+25.5 at Ladbrokes.com.au)

Saturday – Gold Coast Suns vs Collingwood Magpies

The Gold Coast Suns and Collingwood Magpies are both chasing finals berths and this game could decide which of these sides finishes in the top eight.

The Suns were most disappointing against the Hawks last weekend and they will need to produce a much improved performance to be any chance against the Magpies on Saturday afternoon.

Collingwood performed fairly against Carlton last Sunday night, but they have been inconsistent throughout this season and generally a losing proposition for punters, making them tough to trust from a betting standpoint.

The Tip: Gold Coast by 13

The Bet: Gold Coast to beat the spread (+5.5 at Ladbrokes.com.au)

Sunday– West Coast Eagles vs Sydney Swans

The West Coast Eagles produced an improved effort against local rivals Fremantle Dockers last weekend, but were still unable to walk away with the four points and their chances of making the finals are effectively over.

The Swans have continued their winning run and it is tough to see it ending anytime soon; with the side playing a professional, polished and consistent style of football, which has them as favourites to win the 2014 AFL Premiership.

West Coast generally produce their best football in front of their home fans, but they have been subjected to big losses against some of the top sides in the competition this season and they are staring down the barrel of another big loss this weekend.
