2014 AFL Round 18 Betting Preview

There are only five games of AFL taking place this weekend, with round 18 split across two weekends as teams get a final week off before the final charge to the finals begins.

Every team in the AFL still has plenty to play for, whether it be for a top four berth, to make the finals or avoid the wooden spoon, but it is fair to say that this weekend there are a few games that look as though they will be lopsided contests.

While fewer games means fewer betting opportunities, our team of sports betting experts have still strongly analysed each fixture this weekend to come up with the best bets across the five matches.

Friday – Carlton Blues vs North Melbourne Kangaroos

North Melbourne have responded well to their shock loss to the Brisbane Lions in round 15 and they will be taking plenty of confidence into this clash after strong performances against Hawthorn and St Kilda.

Carlton have lost seven of their last eight games and their chances of playing finals football in 2014 are long gone; with attention now focused on whether Mick Malthouse will see out his contract with the side after he was attacked for his treatment of the media during the week.

Leading online bookmaker are offering special odds of $3.50 for North Melbourne to win this game by 40 points or more and based on both sides performances in recent weeks, it looks like a good betting play.

The Tip: North Melbourne by 48

The Bet: North Melbourne to win by 40 points or more ($3.50 at Ladbrokes.com.au)

Saturday – Greater Western Sydney Giants vs Geelong Cats

The two games taking place on Saturday are certainly not the most intriguing games of the year, but it will be interesting to see how the Greater Western Sydney Giants bounce back after their poor final quarter performance last weekend.

GWS were far from disgraced in the first three quarters against Fremantle last weekend, but completely dropped their bundle in the final stages of the game and will be looking to avoid a repeat on Saturday.

However, Geelong have the ability to score plenty of points when they are playing well and the 43 point start on offer for GWS in line betting may not be enough.

The Tip: Geelong by 63

The Bet: Geelong  to beat the spread (-43.5 @ Ladbrokes.com.au)

Sunday– Western Bulldogs vs Essendon Bombers

Essendon were simply superb against Collingwood last weekend and now look as though will play finals football in 2014 after they were disqualified from the finals last season due to the ASADA controversy.

The Western Bulldogs returned to winning form with a quality performance against the Gold Coast Suns last weekend and have played some good football at times this season, but are still yet to find the consistent they need to reach the next level.

Essendon should be able to maintain their winning streak against a gallant Western Bulldogs side and continue their match towards the finals.

The Tip: Essendon by 27

The Bet: Essendon to beat the spread (-18.5 at Ladbrokes.com.au)
